Trent brings a wealth of expertise in higher education, employment, and litigation. Trent recently rejoined Stuart & Branigin after serving as Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel for the University of Vermont and previously in several legal roles including Deputy General Counsel with Purdue University, his undergraduate alma mater. While at University of Vermont, Trent was responsible for overseeing all legal matters for the University and served a key advisor to the Board of Trustees, President and other academic and administrative executives at the University.

In his role as Deputy General Counsel for Purdue University, Trent handled a wide variety of matters involving faculty, staff, and student issues as well as overseeing litigation and agency matters. Prior to becoming Deputy General Counsel, Trent served as Purdue University’s second Vice President for Human Resources, leading a team of nearly 90 professionals in the areas of benefits, classification and compensation, employee relations, leadership & organizational development, and talent acquisition. Trent has also taught undergraduate courses in communication law and labor and employment law at both Purdue and the University of Vermont.

Trent advises educational institutions and employers of all sizes on labor & employment, litigation, and other legal matters. Trent’s broad practice includes providing counsel to employers on workplace policies and their application to disputes that arise in the workplace. Trent also leads and conducts internal investigations and represents employers, colleges and universities in agency matters and before federal and state trial and appellate courts.

Trent is a graduate of Purdue University and Indiana University Maurer School of Law, where he was a Managing Editor of the Indiana Law Journal. Prior to law school, Trent worked as a teacher and then worked in human resources, including working as a Human Resources Manager for a national engineering services firm.

When not at work, Trent enjoys spending time with family and friends, following college and high school sports, and Broadway musicals.
